Most people are happy to let someone else do stuff. This can range from the actual physical labour of doing things through to just thinking about stuff. It's been my observation that people ask first and think later, but only if need be. Grunt Developers are happy to let their thought processes be run by others, they, and many other Worker Bees, are only too pleased to leave their brains at home in a jar and to do no creative thinking.
I find this approach very difficult. Perhaps I am a control freak, maybe I need to know what's going on or maybe I just feel the need to exercise my right to my opinion. But others seem quite happy to coast through life having little to no involvement.
Are you a member of the ships crew or are you a passenger? I consider myself to be a crewmember, actively contributing to the course and wellbeing of the boat. I look around and see many of the passengers, they neither know nor care about the workings of their surroundings and that's the way they like it.
It's not necessarily a bad thing, after all "too many cooks spoil the broth" right? But every now and then I'd like a day off, I'd like to coast for a while, perhaps have a holiday. But can I do this? Of course not. Things break down, don't get oiled and the boat goes around in a big circle till it runs aground.
I don't have all of the answers, I wish I did. It's a relief when someone comes to me not with problems but with solutions, when they have carefully considered everything and arrived at the same or better conclusion that I would. Some people are cool this way and for that they get my respect and admiration.
Don't get me wrong, I get a real kick out of people believing in me enough to ask for my advice and guidance but every now and then I need a break.
